What is a lab grown diamond?
A lab grown diamond – also known as an artificial or man-made diamond – is one that has been made in a lab that perfectly emulates the conditions a naturally occurring diamond needs to grow. There is a common misconception that diamonds made in a lab are somehow less tha their natural counterparts however this could not be further from the truth. Man-made diamonds are still created in similar conditions offering them the same properties in terms of sparkle, colour and hardness.
What are the advantages of a lab grown diamond ring?
Lab grown diamonds are becoming increasingly more popular due to a variety of factors including:
- Ethical and sustainable choice – the diamond industry has had a significant impact on the environment. The mining and transportation are big contributors to the world’s carbon footprint. A diamond made in a lab has no need for mining and can be made anywhere in the world making it the more sustainable option.
- Value for money – lab created diamond rings cost an average of 30% less than natural diamond rings of the same quality and size. This is because production is significantly cheaper and a natural diamond takes over a billion years to form naturally.
- Properties – as mentioned before, the man made diamond has the exact same properties as a natural diamond. This means that while it is more affordable, you don’t lose the brilliance and durability that comes with a mined stone.
