Most people will have heard of a flawless diamond and know that they are highly valuable, but what does it actually mean? And what about diamonds that aren't flawless? In our guide, we'll explain exactly what diamond clarity is and how it impacts the value of a diamond.

What is diamond clarity?

Diamond clarity refers to the presence, absence, or visibility of internal inclusions and external blemishes within a diamond. Diamonds are rated on a scale from Flawless to Included.

SI1/SI2

Slightly included. Inclusions are noticeable under magnification and can be visible to the naked eye.

I1/I2/I3

Included. Inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

What are inclusions?

Inclusions are internal characteristics formed during a diamond's growth process and consist of crystals, feather shapes, clouds, and needles. Most are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye.

Why does diamond clarity matter?

A diamond's clarity impacts its overall appearance, durability, and value. Inclusions can interrupt light as it enters the stone; a heavily included diamond will lack the signature sparkle associated with diamonds and instead appear milky or cloudy in patches.

If major inclusions are present near the surface of the stone, this can weaken it and lead to a risk of fractures or chips on impact.

Clarity is also one of the factors used to price diamonds. A flawless diamond commands a premium as it is exceptionally rare -  priced more on rarity than on appearance, since to the naked eye a flawless diamond looks the same as a well-chosen VS1.
