Finding out your partner’s ring finger size can be challenging. You don’t want to end up in a situation where the ring you buy is too big or the worst case scenario that the ring you purchase is too small ruining your perfectly planned proposal. But how do you find your partner’s ring size without ruining the surprise?

Discover how to find your ring size with Diamond Quarter’s informative guide.

What Will I Need to Measure My Partner’s Ring Size?

To find out your partner’s ring size you will need to check if you have access to the following equipment:

  • An existing ring they own
  • Piece of paper
  • A pen
  • Ruler

Measuring Your Partner’s Ring Size With an Existing Ring

If you can get access to your partner’s jewellery box and locate one of their rings (preferably one worn on their fingers instead of a thumb ring). Always keep an eye on which finger your partner wears this ring on and which hand. Place this ring on the piece of paper on a flat surface, draw around the inside and outside circumference of that ring, then position the ruler to measure the inside diameter against your sketch, from one edge to the opposite edge and note it down in millimeters. Then return your partner’s ring before they notice anything is missing. Use an online ring size chart to generate the finger size in U.K sizes which will give you a letter such as a size M, you may find yourself guessing between two sizes based on your measurement and don’t forget you can choose the half size in between as many jewellers will offer this option too.

Just remember if the ring you have found is worn on the marital finger this will be the closest sizing you can guess, however in the U.K it is traditional to wear the engagement ring on the left hand so if it is worn on the right hand their can be a whole size difference between the two third/marital fingers. Whichever hand your partner writes with will potentially be the slightly bigger finger size as it is the more dominant hand, so take this into account when choosing the final size for their left hand marital finger and if in doubt go slightly bigger to make sure it slides on the finger during the proposal and check the resizing options with your jeweller at the point of purchase.

Use a Piece of String

An alternative to using a ring to find your ring size or your partners is to use a piece of string. Simply wrap a piece of string around where the ring would sit on your preferred finger and mark the point where the string joins with a pen then measure this with a ruler.. Ideally, you should repeat the process multiple times to give you an accurate reading of your ring size or your partners; however this method would be used if your partner is aware that you are planning to propose.

Discreetly Measure Your Partner’s Ring

For many couples who plan to get engaged, you might not know your partner’s ring size. However, there are many ways you can discreetly measure your partner’s ring size without giving the game away, such as:

  • Measuring the finger that your partner plans to wear their ring while they are asleep with a piece of string and a pen, this is the most risky choice so assess if you partner is a light sleeper first.
  • Use the pen and paper trick to draw the ring and then measure in millimetres to estimate the size.
  • Secretly take one of your partner’s rings and take it to the local jeweller to find out their ring size for that finger to estimate the marital finger size. be careful not to lose the ring or give the game away.
