Looking at all diamond styles, cushion cut diamonds have a classic and timeless style, making them well-suited to engagement rings.

Once upon a time, cushion cuts were once regarded as the standard cut for diamonds. When you buy a piece of cushion diamond jewellery, they will instantly never go out of style. Our guide uncovers how to choose a cushion cut diamond so you can buy the perfect engagement ring to accompany your proposal.

What is a Cushion Cut Diamond?

A cushion cut diamond (previously called an old mine cut) combines a square cut with rounded corners, making it look similar to a pillow. It’s one of the oldest diamond shapes that is still being used today as the first cushion cut diamonds existed almost 200 years ago.

Cushion cut diamonds are seen as a modern version of the old mine cut, the most popular round cut up until the early 20th century. While this diamond cut is not as brilliant as the round cut, they do display more fire as a cushion cut can display more bright colours when viewing the diamond from multiple angles.

Compared to a round brilliant diamond, a piece of jewellery featuring a cushion cut diamond costs significantly less than a round cut.

A Cushion Cut Diamond Has 58 Facets

Cushion cut diamonds share a lot in common with most brilliant cut diamonds in that the cut is made up of 58 facets.

The structure of the cut shares a lot in common with a round brilliant cut diamond, making a cushion cut one of the most sparkliest diamond shapes. While a cushion cut does not display as much fire as a brilliant cut, the larger facets on the diamond display large flashes of white light and colours.

The Perfect Length to Width Ratio for a Cushion Cut is Entirely Down to Personal Preference

When it comes to the perfect length to width ratio for a cushion cut diamond, it’s up to you in terms of the length to width ratio.

As the cushion cut features a square or rectangular shape, between 1.00 and 1.60 is the best ratio for this diamond cut. If you want a perfect square, then between 1.00 and 1.05 will give you a square-shaped cushion diamond.

Cushion cut diamonds can exist as an elongated rectangular shape, which we recommend a length to width ratio between 1.10 and 1.30. You can stretch out the proportions of the cushion diamond to 1.60 and above.

Differences Between a Cushion Cut Diamond and Round Cut Diamond

Round cut and cushion cut diamonds share many differences between each other. Most notably, a cushion cut features a more vintage-style shape, compared with the more classic and traditional shape of a round cut.

In terms of diamonds per carat, a cushion diamond has a slightly larger table than a round cut, as well as featuring larger facets, making the stone appear bigger than it already is. The sparkle of both diamond cuts have various types of scintillation, which is made up of two light types, white light (brilliance) and rainbow light (fire).

Cushion diamonds have more fire, which is due to having larger facets on the stone. Whereas, round diamonds have more scintillation, thus emitting plenty of brilliance when viewed from multiple angles.
